Double the pleasure, double the fun.

The La Grande Swim Club powers-that-be experienced such feelings when two groups of kids split up, traveled to different locations and competed well during the weekend of July 24.

One group, consisting of 14 kids, attended the John Day Invitational. The other, consisting of 10 kids, competed at the  Inland Empire Swimming LCM Championships in Spokane, Wash.

Let’s start with John Day.

Garren Dutto won two events in his 8-and-under age group — 25-yard backstroke, 25-yard breaststroke. At the next level, in the 9-10-year-old group, Bryce Ebel won events in the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard IM.

Last, and certainly far from least, was Matthew Cook, who won six events in his 13-14 age group. Whether it was distances of 50 yards, 100 yards or 200 yards, or events such as backstroke, freestyle, butterfly or IM, he finished first. Every time.

On to the Inland Empire meet.

More than 500 kids competed at these Championships, and each event obtained more than 50 swimmers. The top eight in each event qualified for the finals, and the following eight qualified for the consolation finals. 

Logan Gomez qualified for the consolation finals in each event, and made the finals in two events.  And Allie Godfrey reached the consolation finals in three events.

Next for the Swim Club is the Oregon Trail Invitational in The Dalles, starting today and running through Sunday.
